DIY Wooden Headboard With Sconce Light

Chic On A Shoestring Decorating features a train themed boy's room with several train themed decorating ideas, but the headboard caught my attention.  The wooden headboard incorporates a bedtime light by installing a simple outdoor fixture at the top of the headboard.  Sometimes the simplest idea is the smartest.

Decorating Tip : Picking The Right Size Outdoor Carriage Light

Deciding on the right size outdoor carriage light can be a brain teaser.  Hinkley Lightng shares these smart tips from the experts that will help you determine the perfect fit.

SIZING GUIDELINES : OUTDOOR LANTERNS
Selecting the right-sized outdoor lantern can sometimes pose a challenge. Follow these sizing guidelines for a fit that’s just right. The height of an outdoor lantern should be based on the height of the door:

DON’T UNDERSIZE YOUR LANTERNS : As a rule of thumb, your lanters should appear to be proportionate to the size of your door from 50' away.

FOR 1 LANTERN: If you place a lantern on only one side of the door, it should measure one-third the height of the door. The center of the bulb should rest 66” above the threshold of the door.

FOR 2 LANTERNS: When two lanterns are used, they should each measure approximately one-fourth the height of the door. The center of the bulb should rest 66” above the threshold of the door.

TIP: In either case, if you choose a fixture with a long tail or top scroll, pay attention to the overall bulk of the fixture.

TIP: When in doubt, always go larger. via Hinkley
“When choosing decorative fixtures, consider the architectural style of your home and the interior design elements you wish to complement. Fixtures should be appropriate to the time period the house was built and its overall styling, whether Arts & Crafts or Colonial or Modern. Consider scale as well, making sure that the fixture is in proper proportion to the space it is illuminating and nearby architectural elements such as corbels and doors.”

Creating Relaxing Outdoor Spaces

This weekend I have been devoting myself to the yard so I felt a little outdoor space inspiration was in order.  I am specifically working on the deck and trying to decide what direction to go.  These relaxing outdoor spaces are interesting me, especially the space with the horizontal slats.  Find outdoor lighting and more at Lewis Lighting and Home.

Creating an outdoor space the rivals your indoor space is such a gratifying feeling.   Having a succulent outdoor space makes you want to be outside more, entertain outside, open the blinds more, you get the idea.  Landscaping is also a big selling point for homes, and great landscaping can correct many wrongs when closing the deal on selling a home.  This idea book is on homes with curb appeal.  Find outdoor lighting and more at Lewis Lighting and Home.

Period Decorating: Early American Lighitng

Rather you have a look cabin or colonial style home, there is a resergance of early American style light fixtures.  This trend of the old being new again yet still looking old stems from home owners wanting the new home with the character of an older home.  Check out some of new/old outdoor lighting fixtures.

Repairing and Replacing Outdoor Light Fixtures

After heavy snow, many people have suffered power outages and damage due to the weather.  If an outdoor light has been damaged due to falling limbs, sometimes the repair can be as simple as replacing a globe or replacing the light fixture itself.  Posts for post mount lighting are quite standard and the light at the top of the pole can be easily replaced.  If you are needing to replace a globe for a globed post light (like the one above), globed post lights come in many different shapes and sizes, if you are able, bring what is left of the globe or bring an intact globe into the store. This will help in locating the right shape and size replacement globe.

Lovely Luminous Landscape Lighting

Spring has sprung and it is time to turn our focus to the outdoors.  My irises bloomed over a week ago and I have a list of outdoor projects that will surely keep me busy all season.  One of my projects is to install some additional landscape lighting.

Designer Amy Albert has a few pointers to help you choose the right lighting for your landscaping.

“Consider the architecture of your home when you're choosing landscape light fixtures, so the style is appropriate to the period, scale and design of your home. It's often nice to repeat a motif, material, or color in the house to blend the structure with the outdoor fixtures. In most cases, you want the light to highlight a feature in your garden not draw attention to itself. For that reason, fixtures made with natural materials, nature inspired colors, and organic shapes are particularly well suited. When choosing a fixture, consider too how it will look when exposed during the winter months when there is little plant growth.” ~ Amy Elbert
