Decorating : Mid-Century Style Interior

If you naturally like clean, sleek lines, and are looking for decor and furniture to match your tastes, you may be a fan of Mid-Century Modern style.  Officially coined a genre in the 1950's, Mid-Century Modern is categorized as an era of style spanning from the 1930's through the 1960's.  The style is noted by clean lines and a graphic quality.  Mid-Century style had a resurgence of popularity during the 1980's, but with devoted fans has achieved a constant appreciation.  Pieces from the era have become modern classics and are accepted with traditional decor.  When shopping ask for the style by name.

This colorful contemporary home by Sylvie Rochon is a perfect example and showcase of Mid-Century furniture and style.  Note the low table by Montreal artist Guy Monteur, which is a reinterpretation of a design produced by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, the famous New York decorator from the 1940s and 1950s.

Making It Work In Girona, Spain

The style of decorating I call "Making It Work" is a simple concept.  The space doesn't have to be pristine.  The furnishings don't have to be new and they don't even have to match.  However, decorating with things you love or decorating with what you have in loving way is "Making It Work."  This home in Girona, Spain is a perfect example of this principle.  I believe I could make it work in Spain.

Interior Design Tips:  A small space doesn't have to be small on style. Designer Eric Cohler, who was featured a while back, opens his cozy Manhattan apartment. 

My last apartment was starkly modern and crisp. This place is in an 1861 row house that's barely 11 feet wide — it was never meant to be grand. I've always lived in very large apartments or houses — I've been spoiled by space. I didn't know how to live in a small space, but now I wouldn't live in a large space ever again. In fact, I hardly use my dining room. People don't need as much space as they think they do. We have too much stuff. Edit, edit, edit! I've started counseling clients, "Smaller is better — but make it more luxurious." Small, luxurious touches make you feel cosseted. ~ Eric Cohler
