With an immense appreciation of finery and all that is worthy of being antique, I am in awe of this home.  Count Raniero Gnoli shares his Italian home with Architectural Digest and all I can say is - "thanks dude."

One of the world’s greatest authorities on Roman and Byzantine marble, a scholar of Tantric Buddhism, and for more than 40 years a professor of Indology at Sapienza Università di Roma, Gnoli knows what he likes and what he doesn’t. With the exception of a few kitchen appliances and the electricity powering the lights, he tends to avoid living with things invented after the Industrial Revolution—and that includes television, fax machines, and the Internet. “Beauty is a prime necessity for me,” the count explains, puffing on a cigar. “Communication is not.” - Architectural Digest

Houses are precious commodities in Beirut. Since Lebanon’s civil war ended two decades ago, the city has been rebuilt and revitalized into a place of soaring glass condominium towers, upstart art galleries, chic restaurants and cocktail lounges, and—risen from the rubble of the old souk—a pristine shopping mall filled with luxe fashion brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, and Louis Vuitton. But sadly, you can count on your fingers the traditional dwellings in the downtown area and the façades of several are scarred from smoke and shelling.

So when interior designer May Daouk moved back here from New York with her sons ten years ago, she was exceptionally lucky to find a charming single-story late-19th-century villa, belonging to one of Beirut’s leading families. My father, Felix Buatta, was a bandleader known as Phil Burton, and when he arrived home at three in the morning from working at the Savoy-Plaza Hotel, my mother would be waiting for him in their bedroom, perfumed and made up.
