Mario Buatta: People say the living room or the kitchen is the heart of a house, but it’s really the bedroom. You spend one third of the day there, so it should be idyllic—and a place where you look your best for the person in your life. My father, Felix Buatta, was a bandleader known as Phil Burton, and when he arrived home at three in the morning from working at the Savoy-Plaza Hotel, my mother would be waiting for him in their bedroom, perfumed and made up.
