The Biltmore Estate: The Grand Staircase

Built in 1895, during the Gilded Age by George Vanderbilt, this estate is a masterpiece.  If you are traveling near Ashville, North Carolina, treat yourself by visiting the Biltmore Estate

The Grand Staircase
Based on the Chateau de Blois in France, the Grand Staircase is cantilevered into the wall so it has no outside supports.  Each step is a solid piece of carved limestone that continues, through the wall to the outside of the house.  The Grand Chandelier weighs 1,700 pounds and was electrified from the beginning.  It has 4-20 amp circuits supplying the power and is lamped with candelabra-based bulbs.
