Mr. Monotony

The 1948 film Easter Parade, starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, music by Irving Berlin, was one of the last great large budget musicals by MGM. This scene, starring Garland, features the performer in her prime.  Judy Garland was a master of her craft - every glance, every step, and every hand gesture is pure effortless perfection.  By herself with no fancy sets and only one prop - a small black hat - she commands the entire screen.  Sadly this scene was cut from the film.  Luckily the footage survived for us to enjoy today - Mr. Monotony - one of my all time favorite performances.

Judy Garland - Mr. Monotony (Easter Parade 1948)

Take after take - each time with only minor differences in her delivery.  I wish we could hear the notes they were giving her - it is interesting to watch her work.
